Would it be possible for phone manufacturers to make removable back covers that support NFC?

Now that Android supports NFC, I would definitely like to have the hardware implemented in my existing phone. I love using NFC with my Debit card, it just speeds things up (not to mention you don't have to wear out your magnetic strip).
