Why are orange cats usually male?

It's because male cats are XY and female cats are XX. For a male to be orange he only needs the gene coding for orange on the one X whereas a female would need the gene coding for orange to be on her two X's. You can get females that are orange though, i've seen so myself, but you are right it is rare.
